Akiko immigrated to the United Stated from the Philippines at the age of 10 years old. Because of lack of resources and false information from her mother’s employer, she fell out of status. Despite the complexities and challenges she experienced as an undocumented API immigrant, she is pursuing her dreams. Currently, she is in the nursing program at San Francisco State University. Outside of her academics, she fights for immigrant rights as a core member of ASPIRE to raise the voices of API undocumented immigrants, to challenge the mainstream view of immigration, and to advocate for the passage of pro-immigrant policies. In the Spring of 2013, she was awarded SFSU’s Breaking Barriers to Achieve Academic Excellence Award in recognition for her academic excellence, community service, social justice, and resilience in succeeding in higher education.
